Asian AI startups launch Mythos-like models

What actually happened with Fugu and the Mythos export ban?

On 27 June 2026, Tokyo based Sakana AI launched a new model called Fugu, positioned as a rival to Anthropic's Mythos Preview and Fable 5. The launch came two weeks after the US introduced export restrictions on those two Anthropic models for non American users, around 13 June 2026.

Separately, Chinese firm 360 unveiled Tulongfeng and Yitianzhen, two tools for automated vulnerability detection and cyber defence. Different use case, same story: when access to leading US models is restricted, well funded competitors elsewhere move fast to fill the gap.

Why does this matter if I run a small business in the UK?

It matters because the AI tools you use for content, customer service or admin may soon run on infrastructure you did not choose and cannot easily verify. If a chatbot or writing tool you rely on switches its underlying model from a US provider to an Asian one, you may notice nothing until something breaks or the terms change.

This is not about which model is better. Anthropic's run rate revenue hit $47 billion in May 2026 versus Sakana AI's $2.65 billion valuation, so scale is not the worry. The worry is fragmentation: more models, more regional restrictions, less certainty about what runs behind the tool you pay for.

Should I switch tools or wait and see?

Neither. Do not panic switch, and do not ignore it. Stop caring which model powers a tool and start caring whether you own the data and workflow around it, so you can change providers without losing your business.

UK small business AI adoption reached 54% in 2026, up from 35% in 2025 and 25% in 2024, per a Federation of Small Businesses survey. Most of that is writing and content tools, used by 71% of adopters, chatbots at 38%, and admin automation at 29%. Almost all of it is rented, not owned.

What should I actually do about it this month?

Three things, in one order: audit, then export, then own.

  • Audit every AI feature switched on in your business, from chat widgets to booking confirmations, and note the underlying provider
  • Confirm you can export your customer and booking data from that tool at any time
  • Keep core content, services, prices and booking, on a website you own rather than a rented platform or link page
  • Repeat this audit every 6 months, this space is moving fast

Is being recommended by AI assistants the new SEO?

Yes, and the Fugu launch makes it more urgent, not less. If ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and a growing set of Asian models all pull from different sources to answer "best plumber in Leeds", your business information needs to be correct and consistent everywhere, not optimised for one search engine.

We saw this with a plumber client spending £280 a month on Yell for 3 leads. Moving that budget to a verified Google Business Profile plus a £120 a month Google Ads campaign took them to 18 to 22 enquiries a month. The lesson holds regardless of which model does the recommending: clean, owned, accurate information beats a rented listing.

What is Braynex Services' take on all this?

The model race is not your problem to solve, but the ownership question underneath it is. Every business we have worked with that rented its presence, on Fresha, Linktree, Yell or a Facebook page alone, has hit the same wall: the platform changes its fees, terms or access, and there is nothing they can do about it.

One nail salon we worked with was paying Fresha around £1,800 a month in commission. Moving to their own booking system, at £35 a month, saved roughly £21,000 a year, and meant the booking data belonged to them, not a platform. The same principle applies to Fugu, Mythos and every model that follows: own your infrastructure and you are insulated from decisions made in Tokyo, Washington or Beijing.

The barrier holding most UK small businesses back is not cost, cited by only 31% of owners. It is not knowing how to use these tools effectively, cited by 44%. That is a knowledge gap, closed by setting systems up properly once, not by chasing whichever model is newest.
