Why Your Google Business Profile Isn't Getting You Calls
Why isn't my Google Business Profile getting me any calls? Usually because the profile exists but does not earn trust.
Why isn't my Google Business Profile getting me any calls?
Usually because the profile exists but does not earn trust. It is unverified, half-completed, thinly reviewed or unanswered, so people see it and choose a competitor. A listing is not a lead source until it is complete, verified and actively managed. Being visible and being chosen are different problems.
Here is the uncomfortable part. Most advice treats a Google Business Profile as a box to tick. We think that is the mistake. It is a shopfront that people judge in about three seconds on a phone, and an untended one looks like a closed shop.
How many UK businesses actually have a complete profile?
Fewer than half. A 2025 industry roundup, citing Visionary Marketing (we have not checked the original), reports that 26% of UK small businesses have no profile, 59% have claimed one without fully completing it, and only 41% have a fully claimed, complete profile.
That gap is your opportunity. If most of your local competitors have a half-finished listing, finishing yours is one of the cheapest ways to stand out. You are not competing with everyone, only with whoever else is on the map beside you.
What does a "good" profile bring in each month?
The same roundup, drawing on SQ Magazine (which does not cite its source), puts the average UK profile at about 81 actions a month: roughly 31 direction requests, 28 website clicks and 22 phone calls. About 71% of interactions come from mobile. Treat these as rough benchmarks, not promises.
Open the Performance section of your own profile and compare. If you are well below 22 calls a month and your business is genuinely active locally, something on the profile is putting people off. The steps below are where to look.
Why does an unverified profile cost me so much?
Unverified profiles are limited in what they can show and change, and they give you no control over your details. Verification is what makes the listing yours. Skipping it because the process looks fiddly is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
Google's video verification is simpler than people fear. The recording must be unedited, at least 30 seconds, filmed live on a mobile device through the Business Profile, with no breaks. Google reviews submissions within 5 business days, and a rejection comes with specific feedback so you can resubmit.
- Storefronts: show street signs or nearby businesses, signage matching your profile name, and a staff-only area such as the till.
- Service-area businesses: show location landmarks, branded equipment or vehicles, and evidence of the work you do, or documents matching your profile name.
Make sure your profile name matches your signage exactly before you film. A mismatch is an easy way to be rejected.
What does a verified, optimised profile actually deliver?
Real calls, quickly. A Leeds salon Braynex Services worked with had no online presence at all. Within 3 weeks of verifying and optimising its Google Business Profile, it was receiving more than 40 calls a month from Google Maps.
Nothing exotic was involved. We verified the listing, chose accurate categories, added real photos, wrote a plain description, and listed services and opening hours properly. It shows that the gap between "having a listing" and "getting leads" is mostly basic work that nobody had done.
What should I fix on my profile first?
Work in this order, because each step builds on the last. Do the first two in one sitting and the rest across a week.
- Verify the profile. Nothing else matters until you control it.
- Choose one accurate primary category. "Plumber" beats a vague catch-all. Add secondary categories only if they are true.
- Check name, address and phone number. They must match your website and signage exactly.
- Add every service with a short plain description, plus accurate opening hours including bank holidays.
- Upload your own photos: the front, the inside, your team and finished work. Skip stock images.
- Link to a real page on your own website, not a social media profile.
How much do reviews and replies matter?
A great deal, and the bar keeps rising. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 31% of consumers will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% the year before, and 68% require at least four stars.
Recency and replies count too. 74% look for reviews written in the last three months, 81% expect a reply within seven days, and 19% expect one the same day. So ask for reviews continuously, not in a one-off burst, and reply to every one, including the awkward ones.
A review request is not a favour you ask of customers. It is a step in your process, like sending an invoice.
The simplest fix is to send your review link by text or email straight after the job or appointment, while the experience is fresh.
Is Google the only place customers check me?
No, and that is shifting. BrightLocal reports Google's share as a review platform fell from 83% in 2025 to 71%, so people are spreading their checks across more sites. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews are also starting to recommend local businesses.
Our view: those assistants lean on consistent, well-structured information. A complete profile, a real website that says the same things, and recent reviews give them something to cite. A profile on its own is a strong start, not the finish.
Should I rely on Google Business Profile alone?
No. It is a powerful free channel, but Google still controls it, and Braynex Services advises against building your whole presence on any platform you rent. Your website, your booking system and your customer list are the assets you own.
The plumber we worked with was spending 280 a month on Yell for 3 leads. Moving to a Google Business Profile plus a small Google Ads campaign at 120 a month, he now gets 18 to 22 enquiries a month. He spends less, gets far more, and the profile is the foundation of both.
What happens after the call comes in?
This is where many businesses quietly lose the money. If a call goes unanswered, the caller rings the next result. A profile that generates calls you miss is worse than useless, because you have paid for attention and thrown it away.
Set up a missed-call text-back, or a system that captures the enquiry and follows up automatically. Then check your Performance figures monthly, and note which changes moved the numbers. Small, tracked improvements beat occasional overhauls.
